What is Iyengar Yoga?Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama).
The Iyengar method
A variety of poses are included to achieve the goal of imporving the body structure and lubricating the joints, creating freedom of movement in the joints.
The poses also strengthen and lengthen the ligaments and muscles. The poses have been selected with the view that they will tone the internal organs and strengthen the nerves. The functional performance of the organic body is subsequently improved. “When you know the extension of the body, you know the extension of the mind” B.K.S. Iyengar |
A safe and user-friendly form of yoga
Considered one of the safest and most user-friendly types of yoga, Iyengar yoga focuses on the proper alignment of the body. All teachers are trained to rigorously high standards to maintain the Iyengar care and precision.
The unique method of using props and the sequencing of the poses highlights some of the reasons why Iyengar yoga is the most respected and referred styles of yoga taught worldwide. Poses are very precise and students are guided through them by an experienced teacher who is trained to make appropriate adjustments as well as using props to ensure that each individual works safely, with maximum benefit to their flexibility, strength and wellbeing.
